Kelly Jones Nominated for Oscar
Critics applaud "convincing" portrayal of Stereophonics lead singer
British actor Kelly Jones is celebrating this week after being nominated for an Oscar in the category of 'Best Actor in a Leading Role'. This is the first-time Jones has been recognised by the Academy Awards, despite receiving great critical acclaim throughout his acting career.
Jones' portrayal of the grumpy Welsh lead singer of a gritty Welsh three piece overcoming Welsh adversity to find success in the Welsh music industry, has wowed audiences and critics alike. The part was originally written for jumper-wearing American Tom Hanks, who reputedly turned it down because "there weren't enough space ninjas in the script". By creating a fully believable grumpy Welsh character, Jones has made the role his own, and is being described by many critics as one of this country's finest acting talents.
"He's one of this country's finest acting talents! A national treasure!" shouted Arts and Culture critic for Kerrang! magazine, Vincent Vapor-Rub, "We should wrap him up in large amounts of tissue paper and bubble wrap and stick him in a big box in a safe place so that he doesn't get damaged!"
Jones' co-star, Stuart Cable said that he was obviously a little disappointed that he hadn't been nominated himself for his supporting role as the slightly-less-grumpy-but-a-lot-hairier Welsh drummer, but that he wished his colleague the very best of luck on Awards Night. During filming, Cable was forced to endure three hours of make-up every day, just to make his trademark big 'hair' (in reality a product of Jim Henson's Creature Workshop) appear realistic on screen.
Other British nominees for the Academy Awards include Basement Jaxx, who are hotly tipped to win the award for Best Costume for the monkey suits they wore in the short drama feature 'Where's Your Head At?'
Jones was too grumpy to be available for comment.
