Kelly Jones Nominated for Oscar

Critics applaud "convincing" portrayal of Stereophonics lead singer

British actor Kelly Jones is celebrating this week after being nominated for an Oscar in the category of 'Best Actor in a Leading Role'. This is the first-time Jones has been recognised by the Academy Awards, despite receiving great critical acclaim throughout his acting career.

Jones' portrayal of the grumpy Welsh lead singer of a gritty Welsh three piece overcoming Welsh adversity to find success in the Welsh music industry, has wowed audiences and critics alike. The part was originally written for jumper-wearing American Tom Hanks, who reputedly turned it down because "there weren't enough space ninjas in the script". By creating a fully believable grumpy Welsh character, Jones has made the role his own, and is being described by many critics as one of this country's finest acting talents.

"He's one of this country's finest acting talents! A national treasure!" shouted Arts and Culture critic for Kerrang! magazine, Vincent Vapor-Rub, "We should wrap him up in large amounts of tissue paper and bubble wrap and stick him in a big box in a safe place so that he doesn't get damaged!"

Jones' co-star, Stuart Cable said that he was obviously a little disappointed that he hadn't been nominated himself for his supporting role as the slightly-less-grumpy-but-a-lot-hairier Welsh drummer, but that he wished his colleague the very best of luck on Awards Night. During filming, Cable was forced to endure three hours of make-up every day, just to make his trademark big 'hair' (in reality a product of Jim Henson's Creature Workshop) appear realistic on screen.

Other British nominees for the Academy Awards include Basement Jaxx, who are hotly tipped to win the award for Best Costume for the monkey suits they wore in the short drama feature 'Where's Your Head At?'

Jones was too grumpy to be available for comment.

Super Furry Animals Set For Multi-Sensory Release

Next album will be "stimulating... washable"

Experimental indie-pop scientists Super Furry Animals look set to release their next album in a format they describe only as "fun". Their last LP 'Rings Around the World' was the first studio album to have a simultaneous DVD release and featured lots of colourful shapes and exciting swirling images.

In an interview with Argos Spring/Summer magazine, scruffy lead singer Gruff Rhys revealed that the band's next ground-breaking project is going to be a fully multi-sensory experience, with the working title of 'the Fun-A-Go-Go Playground', and should be an exciting new direction for both the group and the music industry as a whole.

"There's going to be lots of things to press and hold, loads of bright flashing lights and maybe some mirrors and inflatable bits as well," said Rhys, "The whole product is going to have lots of varied colours and patterns, which we're thinking of getting some local artists in to do. There'll be bucket-loads of surprises and things to chase as well, really stimulating to the mind, you know? Oh, and its going to be non-toxic and washable too."

'The Fun-A-Go-Go Playground' is scheduled for release in December 2002. Suitable for ages 6 months and over

The 100 Bestest Rock Photos Put In Book

The Strokes at number one with holiday snap

A collection of the hundred bestest rock photographs has been put into a lovely collector's edition by the good people at NoiseMonkey.com. It contains lots of pretty pictures that you can look at, cut out, or colour in to your heart's content. You lucky things.

The number one bestest rock photo of all time for ever and ever is an image taken by New York's the Strokes whilst on holiday in Australia. The band are slouched in front of Ayre's Rock, one of the biggest, reddest, and bestest rocks on the whole planet. Ayre's Rock has been a rock of choice for many rock photographers, ever since it was given its first big break on Blue Peter in the 80's.

Most of the top ten is dominated by Mr Gordon McMordon, a traffic warden from Glamorgan, whose moody photographs of the rock garden at the end of his patio impressed the NoiseMonkey.com judges no end. Though not as big, red or well known as Ayre's Rock, McMauden's rocks were praised for their shininess, lovely textures, and quiet expressiveness that characterises the rock scene as a whole.

The photo collection is available from all good NoiseMonkey.com superstores. You know you want it.

Aphex Twin

The Brit Awards, Earls Court

Wednesday 20th

For those lucky enough to attend this unassuming and not-at-all overblown awards event, this live performance promises to be a real treat. Though Brit nominee Aphex Twin's Richard James has been popping up everywhere recently - most notably guest-hosting Top of the Pops whilst Jamie Theakston has a bit of a lie down in a dark room - the public don't seem to be able to get enough of him.

The performance is rumoured to feature a crooning duet between James and Geri Halliwell, plus a selection of crowd-pleasing pop favourites such as 'bbydhyonchord', 'orban eq trx 4', and 'ruglen holon'. Proof that the 'drukqs' do work, this should be an 'Aphex-cellent' evening for back-patting celebrities everywhere.
